Engineers Build in Present Tense

From time to time, I find myself hopping through an emotional mix of awe, disdain, wonder, and near despair at the state of the engineering world. If you sit on LinkedIn for more than a few minutes and sift through posts by some of our greatest minds in tech, you’ll witness immense intellects vying for optimal recognition by an algorithm that prioritizes conflict over all else. You might be left feeling that the role of an engineer is to argue rather than to build, to optimize for SEO rather than create—aiming for maximum entropy rather than cohesion toward progress.

Debate and discourse have their place, serving as crucibles for refining ideas, but they should not overshadow the work of creation itself. Ultimately, we are not pontiffs with deep insight into the future; we are builders in the present. The problems we are uniquely suited to solving exist in the present. The purpose of our tools has remained relatively static: we search, read, analyze, and write data.

Modern AI is revolutionary not because of some fabled mystique, but because of its ability to scale what we’ve always done—analyze patterns, draw connections, and automate processes. But that—that is no more magical than what the best of our solutions have already been doing for a long time. It is revolutionary, but only insofar as what it allows us to do in present tense.

Will many of us create cultural shifts borne of great products with it? Absolutely. But we cannot do so if we spend the greater share of our intellectual capacity arguing with one another over whether or not we’ll eventually be bested by the machine itself.

There is a time and place for that debate. But for us—the engineers, the builders, the pragmatic—I hope that our humble guild of creators follows the true north of progress: empower people, improve lives, and advance society without losing sight of what it means to be human. Because when it all boils down, that’s the team we’re playing for—and if our creations do turn on us, you’ll be grateful for the friends and allies you kept along the way.
