Goodbye Squarespace, Hello Hugo - I made the jump.

Decided to up and move my personal website and portfolio from Squarespace to Hugo - and I couldn't be happier.

Goodbye Squarespace, Hello Hugo - I made the jump.

The What

I finally bit the bullet and jumped off of Squarespace. Having begun as a web developer and transitioning into mobile development, I’ve always had a soft spot for “rolling my own”. When I first signed up for Squarespace I was super excited about the possibilites for having sleek design, ease of use and extensibility. I mostly got the first two but have been sorely lacking on the third. Over the years Squarespace has increasingly locked down what a developer is able to do in their walled-garden of a WYSIWYG editor. They’ve introduced more and more tiers, and eventually started to charge for the “developer’s right” to edit what’s going on behind-the-scenes. Wanna add some code? Eh. Wanna display a Codepen? Eh. Wanna write a mini experience into the site? Good luck. Overall, I get it - they’ve been appealing to a different audience and different priorities. That’s no problem! So I did a bit of research and it seems like Hugo is the way we’re gonna go from here out.

Tech shouldn’t get in the way of creativity, it should enable it. - Probably me.

The How

It’s already late and I am tired from managing this first deploy, but I will get around to updating this article and letting you all know the How of it all very soon! Stay tuned for a part 2.
